Writing your Resume for the Fire Department
When you design your resume for an entry level position you should keep it simple but also make it stand out. There are many good formats, some give attention to education and others to experience. Most Chiefs want a firefighter with a little experience, but someone who is also very trainable and displays a desire to learn and succeed.
Heading
The heading should have your name, phone number, and address.
Purpose Statement
This should be a 1-2 sentence statement of the job you want. IE “A firefighter position with ABC city where my training, education, and desire to learn will benefit the city.”
Education
List your education in order of highest level of education achieved.
Training
This is where you want to list your Firefighter 1 and 2 certifications, Driver Operator certifications, and any other relevant fire service classes or certificates you have.
References
Ask your references before you place them on your resume. These should be professional references and not personal ones. List name/title/phone/and address.
